Courses
Curriculum of the Digital Arts programme has been designed so that from year one to year four the number of compulsory subjects is gradually reduced and the freedom to choose courses according to individual preferences increases.
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all template.
The programme consists of practical and theoretical courses accompanied by independent creative work in the studio. We have divided the courses into 4 main tracks: Art, Digital, Algorithms and Theory.
Studios
Largest courses at AFAD are studios. They take up to a third of students’ time. Usually in the studio you create one art piece over the semester. You spend the time creating and consulting your art with teachers and your classmates. There are three studios in our Digital Arts programme:
- Preparatory Course Digital arts
- Studio – Guide to The Galaxy
- Multimedia Studio (elective) medialab.sk
Fine art track
Drawing courses primarily focus on skills that are also needed in digital artwork, such as visual language, spatial imagination, and head-hand coordination. Optional courses in photography and classical original drawing are also available.
- Drawing
- Project Drawing
- Basics of Photography (elective)
Digital track
In the digital thread, we are learning different software tools and technological processes for creating artistic content. We work in 2D and 3D, with animation, sound and multimedia.
- Audiovisual Production
- 3D Modeling
- Multimedia and Video Projections
- Prototyping and Fabrication
- Digital Sculpture (elective)
Algorithmic track
We use algorithms to create graphics and multimedia, games, virtual reality. We start from scratch, no previous experience is required.
Theory track
The cultural, theoretical and philosophical context for the digital arts is provided by a set of theoretical courses that begin with a more general overview and continue specifically in depth in the domain of digital media.
- Fine Art in Cultural Context
- Introduction to Studies
- Issues Faced by Art Media (Digital Arts)
- Image Analysis (Digital Arts)
- Slovak Art of the 20th Century
Optional courses
In addition to the courses listed above, you can optionally enroll in courses from a wide range of other study programmes at AFAD. Are you interested in marketing for artists? Do you need to catch up on your vector graphics skills? Don’t know what bio-art is but intrigued by the name? We have courses for all that and more.
AFAD even allows you to take a semester in the studio of another programme, so if you want to create a sculpture as your semester’s work, or if you want to do photography, you can take a so-called studio internship instead of your core studio. Or you can enroll in an additional studio along your Digital arts studio and create two projects in parallel.
